Solo Parenting and Bedtime!

Whether your partner is away for the night, travels often or you’re a single parent, bedtime routine with multiple kids can feel like a MARATHON but without the medal and halved bananas. I mean… maybe you’re having water thrown at you to cool you down but its probably coming from a toddler and not a volunteer!! Below are some simple ways to help you keep your sanity during solo bedtime routines!

Routine

Give yourself plenty of time for your bedtime routine. Prioritize who needs to go to bed first and focus on them! If you have multiple children who need to go to sleep at the same time, make it a game! Pretend you’re a train conductor and each part of your bedtime routine is a stop on the train. Get creative!

Use a Sleep Chart

Save and print a sleep chart and/or sticker chart from below! I’ve added several different variations so you can choose what suits your children best. Or, grab a piece of paper and make your own. Review your family “sleep rules” with your children. Repetition is key!

Use a Sticker Chart

Create a sticker chart using a piece of paper and a pen or print one of the charts below. Reward your kids with a sticker each time they stay in their room all night. After 5-7 stickers, reward them with an ice cream or something simple! Sticker charts are very hit or miss with kids, the true reward should be the success they feel when they accomplish their goal.

Before Bedtime Play

Get the wiggles out! Put on some music, clean up toys, move your body and jump around! Throw your couch cushions on the ground and let your kids get wild!

Assembly Style

Before baths, lay everyone’s pajamas and tooth brushes out! If your children are old enough, encourage your kids do what they can independently.

Independence

If you need to focus on one child at a time, gather some of your “big kids’” favorite independent play items and encourage them to play independently before bedtime. They may not enjoy this at first but give it some consistency. Many kids learn to love independent play time before bed. It also helps toddlers shift their mindset into independent sleep!

Partner Prep

Have your partner pre-record themselves reading books. If you normally read 2 books before bed, play 2 recordings as a part of their bedtime routine! Use this time in their room to fold your child’s laundry or tidy their room.
